IDM Final

Greetings IDM Class,

I recently heard back from the administration. We will be meeting for our class final during our finals time as scheduled on the finals calendar, which is Wednesday, December 11 at 10:30. 


As a reminder, 
* Please be ready to go at the beginning of of class. Please be on time. And please be ready to share your work as well as to share and receive feedback.


Also, For Critique:

  • 10-15 professionally matted prints turned in inside of a portfolio box or bag
  • Final images should be posted to blog and JPEG files turned in to me
      • Remember, that prints need to be professionally finished - meaning they need to be color corrected AND printed and matted well. 
        • If you have any questions about your project or what is expected please email me before Friday.
  • Bring a PRINTOUT of the two submissions for photographic opportunities. 
    • (If you have emailed me this previously, please bring me a printed copy
  • All blogs should be up to date at this point.

CAMPUS CLOSING

Hello Class,

As you are probably aware, the campus closed today and will be closed tomorrow. Therefore we will be unable to complete our critiques as scheduled. Due to this, we will be rescheduling critique for finals week. I am in the process of getting approval as to what day that may be. Once I hear for certain, I will post it to the blog and send out an email to everyone. 

 Please email me with any questions or concernes. Have a great weekend and please stay safe and warm!



Also, any late work is due Monday by midnight. If you turn in something on your blog, please email me and let me know so that I can grade it.

Friday December 6: Final Critiques

This Friday, December 6, 2013 will be our final critique and final meeting for our IDM class.

You must be prepared to present your work at the beginning of class on Friday. 

We have a very full class and we will probably take up the entirety of the class. Please be on time. And please be ready to share your work as well as to share and receive feedback.


For Friday's Critique:

  • 10-15 professionally matted prints turned in inside of a portfolio box or bag

Photo Exhibition

IDM Photo Exhibition: TIME CHANGE

SPE Curatorial Portfolio Walk Through, San Francisco 2012

The IDM exhibition in the TAMUC Student Center has been moved to Thursday, December 5 from 10-12 noon due to a scheduling conflict. Please make every effort to attend this event to see all the work from this semester's photo classes! 

  • Where: TAMUC Student Center, 2nd Floor
  • When: Thursday, December 5, 2013 from 10 - 12 noon
      • Try to get there a little before 10 if possible. This will ensure that everyone has enough space.
  • What: A portfolio walk through of all IDM classes. 
    • (Similar to a session at FotoFest or SPE). There will be a large open space/hallways that will be lined with tables. Each table will have 2-3 students. 
      • Work should be matted so that the work looks finished and so that others can flip through the prints without damaging them. (unless there are extremely large photographs where this would be difficult.) 
  • How: I understand that not everyone will be able to make it due to class or work conflicts. 
    • We request that you ask a fellow student or family member/friend can drop off or pick up your work for you. This way you and your work will still be represented. 
      • If that is not possible, and you are not able to be there for the entirety of the exhibition, please come to part of it if you are available. 

    • I will not be able to attend due to prior teaching engagements. But I will be there in spirit and wish you all the best of luck. I will also have a sign-in sheet with Leigh Merrill.

Just a reminder that the digital lab will close at 12:00 pm (noon) on Wednesday 11.27.13.
And will remain closed Thursday and Friday, 11.28-29.13.

The lab will reopen on Saturday, 11.30.13. Lab hours are 9-1. Sunday hours are TBA. 
(They should be posted by now though.)

    • Joe Miller has a site that talks briefly about window matting and placement. But the real gem, is that he has a FREE DOWNLOADABLE EXCEL PROGRAM THAT WILL CALCULATE YOUR MAT BORDER MEASUREMENTS FOR YOU.
      • Seriously. If you lose the handout I passed out in class. Or you are a little confused about the Golden Mean. Or you were half zombie/half asleep from pulling all nighters the last two weeks, or maybe you were just WAY TOO EXCITED about the upcoming break.              (or excited about printing and matting and photography in general. I will pretend this was the reason) 
        • Anyway. Look it up. And when you open the file, it's the 4th tab on the bottom under "Mat Borders."



But what SIZE do my boards need to be?
  • General gallery presentation sizes, according to standard frame sizes: 
                                      (ie: if you would like to pop one of these bad boys in a frame when you're done)

  • If you are printing a non-standard size, such as a panorama or diptych, or a really large photograph and are unsure of what size you need, please email me or ask for the opinion of the lab monitor. 


Remember: 
  • Each student is allotted 10 full sheets (32x40") of white mat board and 10 full sheets of foam core. Mat board is to be used for the front, to cut your window. The foam core is to be used for the backs of your hinged mats. 
      • **** If you are printing on the smaller scale, and you do not anticipate going over 10 full sheets of mat board, you can use the mat board for your backs as well. It is up to your discretion, and how much you think you will need. ***

*** Oh, and make sure you get your cards punched! This helps us keep track of inventory. How much we have left, how much we went through, and how much to allocate for next semester.***

Week 11: Panoramas and GIFS and FINAL PROJECTS

Today we went over some inspiration for the final project and looked at work in the gallery from the other IDM class. 

We then talked about and worked on panoramas in class.

Panoramas (the easy way)

  • Set your camera to fully manual settings. (manual focus, manual exposure). 
  • Turn your camera horizontally. Take a series of images in an approximately 180 degree span, making sure to overlap your images by about 50%. 
  • Process them in Lightroom. (You may use lens correction to remove distortion), then export them to Photoshop.

  • In Photoshop, select the images and go to FILE> AUTOMATE> PHOTO MERGE. Select the files and hit OK. Once Photoshop merges the files, flatten them, make any additional adjustments and crop if needed. 
  • Also, feel free to try and experiment with each of the different options in photomerge: Auto, Perspective, Cylindrical, Spherical, Collage, and Reposition. Post final image(s) your blog. 



Things to think about: Does the white background work for your image, or would it be better cropped? Does black and white add to the image or would it be stronger in color? How does your image stand up to the others? How many layers did you use? Which are best, and why?

In Class "World" Panoramas



Assignment: 
  • Panorama: You will need to produce 2 panoramic images and post them to your blog by next Friday, November 15.
  • Stop Motion: Find two GIFS, that appear to be looping continuously, and post to blog by next Friday. (Right click GIF> Save Image As. Insert as you would a normal image. The GIF format is supported by blogger.) Shoot two videos under 30 seconds each and bring with you to class. GIF Examples posted below.



 

 



Don't Forget about the WORK IN PROGRESS REVIEW:

  • Next week, Nov 15, is the work in progress review. Please bring 5 Works in Progress from your final assignment for a Show and Tell mini crit to get feedback. We will begin printing images. I will also demo how to properly matt and present your work.

Week 10: Individual Meetings

This week we will be having individual meetings during class. You'll be meeting with me individually in the classroom, to review your progress in class. Your blog should be complete and have all the assignments assigned on it and up to date. If you missed class last week and did not make an appointment to see me, we can meet between 2:15 and 3:00 pm.

Today is an open lab day, apart from our meeting. (Meaning: You are only required to be in class for your scheduled meeting time.) And I will be here to help you with whatever you need, but please do use this time to your advantage, and work on your final portfolio assignment.

Final Project

Week 8: Photoshop continued, and FINAL PROJECT OVERVIEW

This week in class we looked at our blog posts as inspiration. We also went over more features in photoshop and started "Retouching." The final project was also introduced.

Semester Long/Final Project: Self-Assigned

For this assignment you will be required to create a photographic project of your own choosing on a Single Theme. You will be working on this assignment throughout the duration of the semester. This should be a thoughtful investigation/exploration of something important to you or that you are interested in.  Your photographic project will include 10 - 15 final images and will be printed and matted as a portfolio.

Timeline:

DUE October 25: Project Proposal

We will have individual meetings to review your proposal. 

            1. This proposal should be between one paragraph long and one page long, but no longer than one page
            2. You should address WHAT/WHY/HOW: 
                              a.  WHAT: the subject matter/topic you are interested in exploring
                              b.  WHY: why you are interested in the topic, why it is significant
                              c.  HOW: ideas of how you plan to visualize/investigate these ideas photographically
            3. Print two copies of this proposal to turn in during your individual meeting.

DUE November 15: Mid-way/ Progress Critique due

Individual meetings to review your progress

            1. 5 digital files for semester long project posted to your blog. Bring your files on a flash drive or hard drive to your individual meetings

DUE November 15: First Print
            1.     During class, print one of your final project images

DUE December 6: Final Critique

All of your 10 -15 images must be posted on your blog
            1.   All of your final project files to uploaded to your blog

Multiple Me

Assignment #3: Multiple Me or Multiple Places

For this project you will create 2 images that composite different (multiple) photographs together.

It's very similar to the "Levitation" images we made using PS layers. 

  • TIP: When you're shooting, be sure to set your camera exposure and focus to manual. And DO NOT move your camera! 
You want your two final photographs to be connected visually and thematically. 

  • TIP: Be thoughtful about the content – what ideas are you addressing? How does the composited image facilitate these ideas? Is the work narrative-based – do you want to tell a story? Are you interested in blurring the boundaries between fantasy and reality? Etc.

We'll all do several in class, then you will do two more on your own. One of them should use you as the subject.

Assignment:
You will post your 2 photographs to your blog and bring in your 2 photographs to project in class for critique.

DUE: October 25
